PARIS: The European Meteorological Agency says the decline in a major US science agency by the US President Donald Trump’s administration has hindered the distribution of important observations worldwide to monitor the climate and forecast season.
The Trump administration has fired hundreds of staff in the National Ocean and the Environment Administration (NOAA) and removed the government websites from the weather and climate data.
The White House plans to move further, US media reported last week by providing financial support for NOAA climate research programs and dismissing scientists and also fired scientists.
Florence Rabier, Director General of the European Center for Medium Range Weather Prediction (ECMWF), Told reporters that the Atlantic and beyond this conflict is feeling deep.
“We have been partners with him 50 years before our start, and he provides a huge contribution to the science of weather forecasts, as well as climate science,” Rabiebeer said on April 10.
“What we have seen since March is that the number of observations given by Noaa has decreased due to the funds cuts,” he said.
He added that the data provided by the weather balloons, which tracks temperature, air speed, moisture and other environmental readings, has decreased by about 10 %.
“These observations were” absolutely fundamental “to predict globally, because the weather does not know any border, Rabier said.
“This is important for climate monitoring – any observation has been reduced that climate monitoring, satellite calibration, is a loss for prediction verification,” he said.
“In terms of both science, and weather and climate observations, I think it will have an impact on the entire community.”
Noaa is one of the most important climate monitors in the world, making it an important goal because the Trump administration has reduced government agencies and has taken advantage of safety and spending on the environment.
Under US media plans, about 75 % of the funds for the NOAA’s Research Branch can be eliminated by a budget of 2026 – the tough deductions that begin this year.
The media said that the administration also wants to cut a budget in a NASA branch, which has been entrusted with the use of satellite to study and monitor the effects of climate change.
The ECMWF operates the Coopernax climate change, which uses billions of measurements from satellite, ships, aircraft and seasonal stations to help with its climate calculations.
