Islamabad:
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Mohammad Junaid Anwar Chowdhury has directed that the Korangi Fisheries Harbor Authority (Kofha) should be upgraded to meet international standards and enhance seafood trade.
The Minister issued a directive during a meeting with Dr. Shahid Mirza, Managing Director of Kofha on Thursday.
Kofha is an important maritime organization in Karachi that operates under the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and manages Fisheries Harbor and an industrial zone designed to promote Pakistan’s seafood trade and economy.
The minister emphasized the urgent need to upgrade infrastructure and operations in Korangi Fisheries Harbor to meet global diet processing, handling and export global standards. He called the modernization not only to increase the quality of exports but also to improve the working conditions of the fishing community.
The Minister remarked, “The global seafood market demands the highest quality quality. To compete internationally and meet these standards, it is important that we invest and accelerate our key fishing infrastructure.”
“Korangi Fish Harbor has a lot of ability and we should unlock this ability through innovation, upgraded facilities and sustainable methods.”
The Federal Minister reaffirmed his commitment to empower the government’s business community, which paid special attention to the welfare of the fishermen, which formed the backbone of the maritime economy.
He instructed Kofha to design steps that could help fishermen through cold storage, hygiene auction halls, modern processing units and financial literacy programs.
“This is not just about exports,” he said. “Our fishermen should be brought into the sin of economic progress, which they need to achieve the development of the modern, competitive market.”
He emphasized that modernizing the Korangi port is part of a broader national strategy that is to improve the maritime and fishing sectors according to the government’s policy for the blue economy.
