NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday approved the Forest Research Institute project for the first census of trees in Delhi and approved the proposal of the Dharhadon -based Institute to increase the green cover in the city. Both of these exercises will be conducted simultaneously-in three and a half years, the census increased in three stages and the green cover in four years.
The census will help to track the population of the trees by area and check illegal fall. The court took the move, keeping in view the fact that Delhi witnessed an average of five trees to fall per hour. A Justice Bench of Justice SS Oka and Ojal Bhuyyan on Friday allowed the exercises to move forward, but asked him to try to complete the tasks in a short term and reduce the budget.
The court also accepted the presentation of additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhatti that the money should be released from the CAMPA Fund for the census. He assured that all the necessary assistance would be provided to the institute but said that the exercise should be concluded in a short time.
According to the FRI, the exercise will be done in three stages, which aims to standardize the tree census method – it will take 15 months. The second phase is about the development of an action plan that will be done in three months, and the last step is implementation, which will take two years.
The Institute said in its affidavit, “The FRI has proposed a budget of Rs 443 lakh for implementation of Phase One and Phase two for the development of the action plan for the development of the action plan for implementation in Phase Three.”
